Java Developer

Code that makes an impact, work that matters

Are you a Developer with a fresh perspective, eager to build smart software that millions of road users rely on every day? Do you value quality and enjoy your work? Then you might be a perfect fit for Tenuki.

About Tenuki

You might not realize it, but there's a good chance you've already encountered our software today. Whether you're checking traffic jams via an app, listening to traffic updates on the radio, or following detours on your navigation system. Tenuki is working behind the scenes in all these applications.

For over 30 years, we have specialized in user-oriented traffic information systems and have been active in the field of Smart Mobility. Our software and systems provide insights into traffic flows, disruptions, and planned roadworks. This information is used by traffic engineers, road authorities, and emergency services — both in the Netherlands and abroad.

What will you do as our Java Developer?

You will work on mission-critical Java applications that are essential for the functioning of traffic systems. Examples are OTIS (which enriches traffic jam reports, indicates detours, and provides warnings such as for wrong-way drivers) and TGOX (which enables real-time monitoring of road sections by traffic control centers). Another project is about preventing collisions in inland shipping by sharing vessel intentions. Besides Rijkswaterstaat, key clients include Stedin and the ANWB.

Your tasks:
  • You write solid and maintainable Java code
  • You work closely with back-end and front-end developers, UX designers, and testers in a multidisciplinary team
  • You develop new features and improve existing components
  • You contribute to the architecture and support ongoing quality improvements
  • You create software that both you and our clients can be proud of
  • And the end result? Software that both you and our clients can be proud of

Working at Tenuki: more than just writing code

Room for your growth

At Tenuki, you’ll have the opportunity to bring out the best in yourself. We work with you to identify your strengths, offer training opportunities (such as courses or conferences), and ensure that you can continue to grow — both technically and personally — as a developer.

Strong together: a tight team in an easygoing setting

We're a small, dedicated team. Everyone has their own projects, but we share knowledge in group sessions and celebrate our successes together (with cake, of course). We have lunch as a team, regularly organize outings — like sailing, escape rooms, or ice karting — and sometimes end the week with a beer.

Involved from start to finish

You'll be part of projects from kickoff to delivery. This gives you a clear view of the bigger picture and allows you to contribute to solutions that truly make a difference.

Personal attention

We’re interested in your ideas — and in how you’re doing. Every three months, you’ll have a progress meeting where you can share feedback, discuss opportunities, or simply brainstorm.

What do we expect from you?

We’re not looking for a superhero, but we do want a developer with a solid foundation and the motivation to grow. Do you recognize yourself in the following?

  • At least 2 years of experience as a software developer using Java, .NET, Python, or another object-oriented language
  • Higher professional education (Academic or HBO) level of thinking and working, demonstrated through education or experience
  • A collaborative mindset and sense of responsibility
  • You’re curious, transparent, and open to feedback
  • You have a keen interest in societal impact and user-centered solutions
  • You take initiative and pay attention to code quality
  • Able to read and write Dutch, or at least interested in learning to do so

What do we offer?

  • A salary between €3,000 and €6,000 bruto a month depending on your knowledge and experience.
  • Profit sharing depending on company results.
  • A pension plan and reimbursement of travel expenses.
  • The opportunity to build software that makes a real difference in society.
  • Being part of a warm and professional team.
  • Plenty of room to develop into a broadly skilled software expert – from development to project coordination.

Why work at Tenuki?

At Tenuki, it’s about more than just software. We work hard, but also make time for relaxation — think team outings, shared lunches, games, or the occasional Friday drink. And we care: every quarter, we check in to see hoe you're doing and where you can grow.
